An ode to ice cream mini cups

An ode to ice cream mini cups

A great - and under-appreciated - ice cream invention.

I have noticed a disturbing trend at the grocery store: ice cream mini cups are on sale everywhere. This spells doom for the mini cup. If they are on sale, it means that people are not buying them. And if people are not buying them, then eventually the store will stop selling them. And then I will be sad. Seriously people, you have to start buying these things, so that I can continue to buy them too!

Sadly, I think mini cups are an example of what happens when you try to give people what they claim they want. For years people have been complaining that ice cream only comes in large units. "I don't WANT to buy a whole pint," people whine, "I'll just eat it all! It's too much! I wish I could buy less at a time!" So eventually ice cream manufacturers gave people what they wanted: Mini cups, one or two ounces of the same ice cream in a little tub.

And guess what? People didn't really want that. They wanted to keep buying pints and cramming it all into their mouths while paying lip service to the idea of moderation.

I'm telling you, though, these cups are awesome. First you have the obvious benefit, which is "damage control." Desperate for some Cherry Garcia, but scared to eat a whole pint? Get a mini cup. Need a little treat, but not a full-on "I ate a pint of ice cream for dinner" binge? Get a mini cup. Heck, get two! It's still less than an entire pint of ice cream.

The other way in which these are great is the variety. Can't decide between Cherry Garcia and Super Fudge Chunk? Buy a little of each! Want some Ben & Jerrys AND some Haagen-Dazs? Get both!

Most mini cups also come with a little spoon attached to the inside of the lid. You can start enjoying your ice cream right there in the grocery store parking lot! Not that I would ever do that.

And finally, I think it's time we faced facts. After you eat a certain amount of ice cream, all you taste is "cold" anyway. It's fruitless to eat an entire pint. Beyond a certain point, you might as well just be eating frozen butter or something. The mini cups represent the exact perfect amount of ice cream to eat before your mouth goes numb. It's a perfect marriage of form and function, and I hope more people start buying them!
