They ate some weird stuff back then
In honor of National Dessert Day, the Mount Vernon Inn Restaurant on George Washington's estate has highlighted some of George and Martha's favorite desserts. And I have to say… it's some pretty weird stuff.
First is the revelation that Martha was such a big fan of gingerbread that the household had a substantial gingerbread delivery bill. She would purchase around fifty pounds (fifty pounds!) of gingerbread at a time.
Their apple pie recipe is particularly bizarre. I don't have the slightest idea what's going on in step #4. You go through all the usual steps to making an apple pie, but you also simmer the cores and peels with cinnamon in water on the stove, reduce that water to make a syrup, then pour TWO CUPS of that syrup into the pie before baking it. It must have been like soup!
But my absolute favorite is syllabub, which is a dessert drink. You blend whipped cream with white wine and sherry, and serve it in a tall glass with a spoon. That's so weird, I just might have to try it!
