Chocolate, fruit and edible flowers

I scream. You scream. We all scream for ice cream!

Who hasn't heard that saying before? Now that we are in the middle of hottest summer I can recall, I've been screaming more frequently for my favorite frozen treat. I'll eat it on a cone or in a banana split, and I always add toppings to make it even yummier. Make your scoop of Blue Bell more exciting by experimenting with some bold ice cream toppings.

Yes, chocolate is my favorite ice cream topping. As a child, I was mesmerized by Magic Shell, but after reading the nutritional facts in my adult years, I realized that it was only adding a coat of paint to my arteries. Nowadays, I make my own crispy shell by mixing melted chocolate with coconut butter. It hardens just like the real deal, and I don't worry about needing an ambulance when I'm finished. Don't just play it safe with milk chocolate. Try melting dark chocolate or even hot chili-infused chocolate for a treat your taste buds will never forget.

Eat your fruit!

Like most of the country, I don't eat enough fruit on a daily basis. The easiest way for me to remember to eat more fruit is by adding it to my dessert. You can choose to cover your ice cream with chunks of bananas or whole raspberries. If you're feeling a little more industrious, reduce your fruit to a compote on the stove. I love doing this with blueberries. Simply add a little bit of agave nectar to the berries, and simmer until the fruit breaks down and the juices appear. This is heavenly over vanilla bean ice cream.

Edible flowers!

Yes, you read that correctly. There are many edible flowers, and most of them are delicious on ice cream. My favorite is lavender. I purée the lavender in my food processor until it's almost a paste. I like to mix it with marshmallow cream before adding it to the top of my sundae. If lavender isn't available, try using fresh rose petals instead. These toppings are perfect for a romantic date.

Ice cream topping possibilities are endless! If you have a favorite, tell me all about it in the comments. I may just try it on my next bowl of Ben & Jerry's.
