One of my absolute favorite ice cream flavors is Breyers double-churned vanilla. I know it’s not the best to buy by any means, but the flavor is just incredible. I’m a big vanilla ice cream eater—unlike the favorite flavors of many people that I know, vanilla is pretty much the only ice cream flavor I love (with the occasional citrus or strawberry exception), and Breyers seems to make it best.
Unfortunately, I won’t be buying my favorite ice cream anytime soon—at least, not until Breyers agrees to stop selling products with rGBH, or recombinant bovine growth hormone, in them. This genetic modification is inserted into cows in order to make them produce even more milk than they are normally physically (and naturally) able to deliver. While it works to meet this highly questionable—if ethical—goal, it also releases the rGBH into our food as well.
The results of having these genetic modifications in our milk, ice cream, and other products have been disastrous. An increased risk of cancer has been linked to the additives, as have people’s resistance to antibiotics.
And for those who believe that this worry is unwarranted, it’s considered a pretty hefty risk internationally. In fact, the rBGH hormones have been banned in 27 separate countries in the European Union—as well as Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. So what do these countries have that we don’t aside from universal healthcare? Safe milk products, it would seem. (Jeez, America, when are you gonna catch up? Does our government just like to watch us get cancer and die? Maybe it’s their form of modern gladiator sports.)
Many ice cream suppliers, thankfully, have agreed to stop using suppliers who use these harmful chemicals. (Thank you, Ben & Jerry’s, Starbucks, and many more companies for caring about American health!) A few of them, however, refuse to make any progress—such as Breyers and Dreyer’s.
Until they agree to stop poisoning us with these harmful additives, we must stand together and refuse to purchase their products. Remember, even their products labeled “All-Natural” still contain these growth hormones. Please consider writing these companies today—or calling them, which can be even more powerful—and letting them know that you’d like them to stop putting unnecessary poisons in your food. Please let all of your loved ones know as well—if not to take action along with you, then to at least avoid rGBH whenever possible.
