My husband and I often argue about how frequently we should enjoy dessert after dinner. In his mind - which is sometimes crazy and always wrong - dessert should only be an occasional treat. On the other hand, I believe that dessert should be served at almost every meal - dinner, lunch, breakfast (cinnamon roll anyone?). I mean, if you just ate a plate full of vegetables, then you should be able to treat yourself to giant bowl of ice cream, right?
In my opinion, dessert is what I really look forward to whenever I eat. A meal is not complete until I have indulged in something a little bit sweet. It does not have to be a huge piece of cake with sugar flowers and sprinkles - a small square of dark chocolate will suffice. A dessert coffee or cup of tea served with some fruit is also suitable for a lighter version.
I find that a lot of people are ashamed to partake in dessert. Can you believe that? They are afraid that eating sweets will cause them to gain weight. Sure, a huge slice of cheesecake covered in caramel and pecans every night will wreak havoc on your thighs, but a single strawberry dipped in powdered sugar or chocolate syrup will not. It is all about smart choices and self discipline.
People who think that they will gain excessive amounts of weight from sweets are the same people that I see stuffing their faces with fried chicken and fatty steaks. I would rather eat a lighter meal that is followed by a petite treat. I guess we just have different priorities.
So don't feel bad if you are like me and need dessert on a regular basis. Life is too short not to lick chocolate off of your fingers every night.
