Before 10:00 PM tonight, head to your nearest Baskin Robbins for some cheap, cheap ice cream. Every year Baskin Robbins hosts a 31 Cent Scoop Day to benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. Every patron can get up to 3 scoops of ice cream for just 31 cents—that’s less than a dollar for a nice sized ice cream!
And if you’re like my family and you enjoy swapping ice cream while you’re out, get a whole bunch of flavors and take turns trying them out. What a treat! This is a great idea for tonight’s dessert after dinner, or if you want to be sneaky and you live close enough to a Baskin Robbins to try it out, you could do what we did to my preschooler on April Fool’s Day. Get ready for bed as you normally would and once the lights are out, come back in, turn the lights on, and say, “Surprise! We’re going out for ice cream!” The look on her face was priceless, and I’ll bet that your children would treat you with the same big, disbelieving grin if you went for the “prank” as well. You can probably get ice cream for your whole family for under five bucks, which isn’t easy to do these days. I know we usually spend about $10 when the three of us head out to our favorite frozen yogurt place at least twice a month.
You could use this time to embark on your own Family 31 Flavors Challenge, too. Though we’re not currently doing this with Baskin Robbins, we are doing it at another ice cream shop that’s closer to home. We have their list of flavors and every time we go, all three of us get a different flavor so we can swap and try all of the flavors available. We usually do this following story time at the library, which makes for a fun family ritual. Of course, not all of us like the every flavor, so we may not try all of them.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is also a great cause to support. Not only does the nonprofit organization help recognize firefighters who are lost in the line of duty; it also helps support families and coworkers of the fallen during their time of grief. Service firefighters are also awarded scholarships through the Foundation.
What better way to get involved in a cause and get a cheap treat than participating in 31 Cent Scoop Day?
